Ardisia japonica or Marlberry is an evergreen groundcover. Low growing wood grows to 8 - 12 inches. Spreads by rhizomes making a dense mat of foliage. Enjoys moist, well drained acidic soil in partial to full shade. Mature foliage is dark green, but new growth is light green, copper or bronze. Small pink flowers beneath foliage in May thru August. Berries are red and persist throughout the winter. A variegated variety with yelow margins is available.

Trachelosperum asiaticum or Asian Jasmine is an evergreen vine like plant used for groundcover and turfgrass alternative. Rarely blooms. Creates a dense, tangled blanket of small dark green leathery leaves. Grows about 3 ft wide. In shady areas, requires little maintence. Can be mown or pruned in spring to maintain appearance. Requires little watering or fertilizer once established.

Dietes Exotic white or yellow flowers with yellow and purple-blue markings burst from stalks amid stiff, iris-like, evergreen foliage. Profuse bloomers. Good for use in wet areas. About 3 ft tall and 4 ft wide. In mild winters will remain evergreen.

A genus of several species. Canna lilies are low maintenance and easy to grow. Bold tropical looking herbaceous perennials. They range from dwarf varieties that are 2 to 3 ft tall to varietes that are 6 ft tall. Many with dark or variegated foliage and various colors.

Aspidistra elatior or cast iron plant is as tough as its name. Good for difficult to fill areas in deep shade. Lush leafy evergreen spreads by underground stems. 2 ft tall 2-3' wide.

Alpinia zerumbet 'Variegata' Variegated shell ginger has leafty arching stems. Creates a lush tropical effect with boldly striped yellow and green foliage. Drooping clusters of white to pink shell like flowers are sweetly fragrant. A herbaceous perennial needing partial to full sun and moist but not soggy soil. Forms clumps 4 - 6 ft tall and 4 ft wide.

Heuchera or Coral Bells make an excellent foliage plant for sun or part shade. The foliage is much more impressive than the flowers. Clumps or mounds of heart shaped bold leaves. Cultivars range from dark maroons to purples to silvery.

Cyrtomium falcatum. A species of fern known for its hardiness and handsome foliage. Makes an excellent groundcover in shady locations. Stiff dark green shing fronds add great texture. Evergreen in mild winters. Full to part shade 24 - 36 in tall 18 in wide.

Equisetum hyemale Deep green jointed rush-like stems without leaves or flowers. Best used in containers or contained ponds. Evergreen. Fast growing and spreads indefinitely. 3 to 4 ft tall.
